Lodging in a Nutshell

Wendy Schatzman, Contributing Writer

Philadelphia article by The 2000 Republican came and went, bringing with it more than 40,000 delegates, Party leaders and guests, including 15,000 members of the national and international press corps.

In the world of conventions this is as good as it gets. And from a lodging perspective, this is great because it leaves plenty of accommodations to choose from.

Visitors to Philadelphia can now enjoy an array of lodging to fit all tastes and budgets. The hotel boom has created more than 4,000 new hotel rooms, offering lodging in every part of the city. Roughly 5,200 new hotel rooms have opened in the city center since January 1999, bringing the total hotel inventory to approximately 12,699.

New hotels include the Hilton Garden Inn, opening in May 2000, the Hotel Sofitel Philadelphia with 300 rooms, recently opened in February 2000 and the Ritz Carlton, opening in May 2000. The former 290-room Ritz Carlton was purchased by Starwood Hotels, and in July 1999 it became the St. Regis.

Philadelphia is a city surrounded by interesting towns, which also are considered part of the greater Philadelphia area. Despite your budget or your interest, there is something here for everyone.
